Brighton
The Scotts like going away for the weekend. They often go to the country or to the seaside. One of their favourite places is Brighton, a town on the coast, forty miles south of London. There are always lots of tourists in Brighton. It is an interesting place to visit and a lot of people come to swim or bathe in the sea.
In the eighteen century Brighton was still a small fishing village and tourists did not come to bathe in the sea. But then a famous doctor came to live in Brighton. He wrote a book about the place in the book he said that bathing in the sea was good for your health. People began to come then and the town started growing. Brighton became fashionable when the Prince of Wales (later King George IV) built a palace there. The Palace, called the Royal Pavilion, is now a museum and a concert hall. Most of big rock bands play there when they tour Britain.
Philip likes visiting the Engineerium, a museum of science and engineering. Brenda prefers going to the Lanes – a shopping area in the oldest part of the town. She always buys something in the shops. When the weather is good the Scotts go to the beach and swim in the sea. Sometimes they hire bicycles and ride in the hills just outside Brighton. Last Saturday they went up one of the hills near the town. There were some children up there flying model aeroplanes. In the evening the Scotts went to an Italian restaurant for dinner. After dinner they went to a pop concert at the Royal Pavilion. They all had a very good time in Brighton and were very sorry to leave.
